When WKYC Channel 3 News Anchor Russ Mitchell addressed the newly inducted National Honor Society members at VASJ, his message was one of tenacity and perseverance.
Quoting a line from Disney’s Finding Nemo, he encouraged the VASJ students to “Just keep swimming,” in tough times.
“There will be people who tell you, ‘you can’t do this’ or ‘you can’t do that.’ Have a thick skin,” Mitchell said.
Although his career has been impressive and full of successes, including his time as Anchor at CBS Evening News, Mitchell shared with the students at VASJ the struggles he faced when first starting his career.
“Life is filled with highs and lows and setbacks,” Mitchell says. “Have a thick skin.”
It was his desire to succeed and his determination to always do his best that allowed him to achieve his many successes.
“No one will ever out-work me,” Mitchell said. “Every day I give 100%.”

The 23 newly inducted members of VASJ’s chapter of the National Honor Society, as well as the 32 current members, are a great example of students who understand the importance of working hard and giving 100%. The induction ceremony was a chance to celebrate their successes and honor their hard work.
“Continue to always do your best,” Mitchell says. “But you already know that. That’s why you’re here.”“What I noticed on this year’s applications was an awful lot of service,” Joseph said. “It was above and beyond what they are required to do. That surprised me.”
