Only about 4% of all boys who enter Boy Scouts achieve the title of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement or rank attainable in the program. This is in large part because of the truly daunting tasks and requirements.
Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School has been fortunate to have had several students achieve this title. Most recently, William Cartwright ’19 was presented with the honor.
“Becoming an Eagle Scout is not just about yourself,” Will says. “It's about bettering yourself so you can lift those up around you. The process helps you be the best version of yourself, and you in turn can help others become better.”
In addition to earning a total of 21 merit badges and serving in a leadership role for at least six months, scouts must also plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project which helps any religious institution, school, or the community.
Will chose to refurbish the large outdoor deck at Our Lady of the Lourdes Shrine in Euclid.
The refurbishing process involved removing and cleaning the benches, using an outdoor wash on the deck to remove and prevent moss and algae, power washing and staining the concrete wall to seal it against dirt and rain, and re-staining the deck to freshen the look and protect it from the elements.
Before starting the project, Will was required to write and submit a proposal outlining the scope of the project. The proposal had to be approved by the Shrine, his Scoutmaster and unit committee, and his scout council. Once the project was complete, he had to receive acceptance from the same parties that the project was accepted and completed successfully.
“It felt really good to get it done,” Will says. “I had just done something huge, and I had a tangible piece of evidence I could point to and say 'Look at this, this is what all this hard work did!' I'm just so glad I could help the Sisters at the Shrine.”
Congratulations to Will Cartwright ’19 for his hard work, dedication, and commitment to achieving this prestigious rank and putting in the hard work for the Sisters at the Shrine.
