The news of Hurricane Harvey and its devastating impact left VASJ senior Antonia Furlan feeling like she needed to help in some way.
“Since I have been in Catholic school my whole life, there is a big emphasis on helping people,” Antonia says. “The fact that the Marianist and Ursuline have a big emphasis on social justice, as a senior, I feel obligated to really put their ideals into action.”
An aspiring social worker and a member of VASJ’s Catholic Students for Peace and Justice group (CSPJ), Antonia is deeply empathetic to those who may be struggling and going through difficult times.
“It is all over the news that so many people are going to struggle after this and I wanted to come up with a realistic way to help them.”
She decided to hold a bake sale to raise money for relief efforts.
“If I could I would be down there helping but, you know, I have school,” Antonia says. “Since I can’t be there, I figured this is a good way to get the school involved and help that way.”
She made up a (very detailed) proposal outlining the scope of the bake sale including how she will implement it, why it is important, and even a breakdown of what items could be sold and how much of a profit could be made on each item.
She took the proposal to VASJ Principal David Csank and presented her idea.
“He said go for it and now it’s happening.”
The bake sale is taking place September 11-15 during lunches and after school.
If someone wants to help with Antonia’s efforts, she is accepting store-bought baked goods to be sold during the bake sale.
In addition to CSPJ, Antonia also serves as a Peer Minister, editor of the yearbook, and is a member of NHS, GEM, LIFE, and PR Club.
“It makes me happy that our school can come together and help people who really need it.”
