October, a month typically known for its spooky festivities and the changing leaves, is also known for a very serious health issue: Breast Cancer. This particular type of cancer affects about 1 in 8 women in the United States alone. That adds up to an alarming 12.4% of women.
With the efforts of VASJ’s Economics class and a large majority of the student body, VASJ is helping stand up against this horrible disease.
In the past, VASJ has held a day in which students pay a dollar to dress down and the proceeds would be donated to a relevant cause. This year, a student noticed the Breast Cancer Awareness dress down was on the school calendar, and a proposed a new idea to Mrs. Adkins, the Economics teacher.
Senior Danielle Tarsitano wanted to create pink shirts for students to purchase as a fun addition to the dress down. This idea was then reworked to become a fundraiser for a local organization, the JD Breast Cancer Foundation, which helps women by providing essential resources that will help patients cope and manage their illness.
The student response was overwhelming. With over 190 shirts sold, VASJ’s Economics class is proud to be able to make a $2,000 donation to the JD Breast Cancer Foundation.
“We sold over 190 shirts so I couldn't be more pleased,” says Adkins. “I take great pride seeing the hallways filled with shirts that my classes were responsible for designing, marketing, and carrying out!”
