VASJ Peer Ministers entered the gym in a procession, each carrying a burning candle as a symbol of this year’s Opening Mass theme, “Be the Light.”
Each year, the VASJ community of students, faculty, staff, alums, and friends, come together for the school’s Opening Mass to mark the official start of the new school year.
This year’s Opening Mass was held on Tuesday, August, 28. Fr. Joe Fortuna of Our Lady of the Lake served as Celebrant and many parishioners were in attendance.
Fr. Joe remarked that “Be the Light” is a great sequel to last years theme which was, “Hope in Christ.”
“Those who bring light to the world, also bring hope to the world,” Fr. Joe says.
Jesus hanging on the cross, Fr. Joe explained, is a great example of “being the light.”
“Jesus pours out His own light for us,” Fr. Joe says. “This is symbolized best with the cross. Jesus is a reflection of the love of God and a reflection of how Jesus loved and lived,” Fr. Joe says.
It is important to “Be the Light” for others the way Jesus is for us.
“This is a world that needs people to be the light,” Fr. Joe says. “We need all of us to be the light.”
The VASJ students are sure to bring light to the community during this school year and for years to come.
