The 2011 VASJ/Beaumont El Salvador Encounter landed at 10:45 p.m. on Friday at Cleveland Hopkins airport with great sadness that the adventure was over but filled with great happiness to see familiar places and loving arms of family and friends. The members of the delegation realize that the real work of this "Reverse Mission" experience has just begun. In El Salvador, we accompanied very different people with a very different experience of life. Sometimes we wonder who actually accompanied whom on this nine day pilgrimage?

Chris checked in briefly to say that the group was visiting the city just outside of the COAR area and when they returned to COAR they would begin packing up for the trip home. Everyone is fine, healthy and enjoying the trip.

The group is at COAR. It is hot and humid in lovely San Salvador. Yesterday they went to the arts center and spent the morning and early afternoon there. Today they are going to the chapel dedicated to the 4 martyred church women and will be at COAR playing with the kids.

Chris checked in around 8 p.m. The grouptraveled to the mountain top parish of Chiltiupan where they spent the day and had lunch with Sr. Rose, the Ursuline sister who works there. The school kids did a presentation for our VASJ and Beaumont students at that time. The group visited villages in the jungle and visited the homes of the poor villagers. Around 4 p.m. they went to the beach and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening there. They returned to the guest house that night. They'll be going to COAR on Wednesday which is located about 30 minutes south of the capital. Everyone is fine and things are going well.

Chris Janezic checked in Sunday evening. At that time, the group was in the rural community of Guarjila with a women's cooperative of artisans and former refugee community. The village is near the top of a mountain in Northern El Salvador and they could see Honduras from their location. The vigil that they attended Saturday night was very crowded but they managed to meet up with a group from St. Dominic church in Shaker Heights. Chris went to seminary with one of the priests who happened to be with them. They had a two hour drive back to the capital after their visit to Guarjila. They will be staying at their current guest house until Wednesday when they will move to COAR.

Chris Janezic called to say that everything is going well and that they are having a wonderful trip. The weather is beautiful and hot. Today they met with a youth group at a new parish, Holy Cross. Tonight they are at the University of Central America to participate in the commemoration vigil of the martyrdom of the six Jesuits, their housekeeper and her daughter.

4 p.m. Chris Janezic checked in to report that the group has arrived at the guesthouse in El Salvador and everyone is fine. The weather is 90 degrees and breezy.
At 6 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2011, three VASJ seniors and two Religion teachers, along with a group from Beaumont, left Cleveland Hopkins Airport headed for El Salvador. The group will spend the next nine days with Salvadoran citizens volunteering at the Community of Oscar A. Romero (COAR) Children's Village serving as English tutors and interacting with the resident children. The purpose of the trip is to give students an appreciation for the different ways that God and the Church act in other areas of the world.
