Following the calculations of both the first and second quarter honors, more than 40% of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School students earned honors.
After the first quarter, first honors was reached by 16% of the student body while 25% received second honors. After the second quarter, first honors was reached by 16% and 21% received second honors.
Honor Roll is determined at the end of each quarter. The student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA) is determined by totaling the quality point value of all of his or her semester grades divided by the total credits attempted in grades 9-12. To receive first honors, a student must be averaging a 3.8 or higher. To receive second honors, a student must be averaging between 3.3 and 3.79.
On PowerSchool, VASJ’s web-based student information system, a student can see their simple and a CORE (weighted) GPA. A simple GPA is calculated by not incorporating extra honors or AP quality points. A weighted GPA is calculated by incorporating extra honors or AP quality points. Honor and AP courses are “weighted.” Students achieving a grade of A, B, or C in honors and AP courses will receive a +0.5 which will be applied to their GPA. VASJ reports weighted GPA to colleges.
“You have to work your absolute hardest to keep your grades and GPA up,” sophomore Erin Osborne explains. “If you start to get behind you will not receive any type of honors because your grades will start falling. My advice would be to try your hardest so you can achieve being on the honor roll.”
New this year, VASJ Principal Mr. Csank allowed all students receiving honors to dress down for one week. Rewarding students for their hard work has been positively received by those who were able to dress down and will hopefully encourage other students to earn this award in the future.
“By allowing students to dress down for honors, more students are going to work harder to get good grades because they want the award,” says senior
