The theme for VASJ’s All Saints Mass was, “Blessed are those who hope in Christ.” The November 1 Mass was presided by Bishop Roger Gries, OSB.
Elizabeth Smith ’18 gave an introduction to the Mass, where she explained that the saints we were celebrating all had hope in the Lord and that if we wanted to be like those saints, we should also develop this same hope and trust in God that they had.
In his homily, Bishop Gries told the congregation about how we need to develop a relationship with God if we want our souls to be welcomed into Heaven and gain eternal life.
“We’re all made to be saints,” said Bishop Gries. “We’re all made to spend eternal life in heaven. Each one of us has a soul that will never die.”
He also said that to do this, we need to care for one another.
The Bishop suggested that we talk to God and actually listen to His plan for us, and doing this will also help us be welcomed into Heaven.
"Take time in your life to really listen to what God is calling you to do. We are part of God's family which is why we can call Him our Father," said Bishop Gries.
The names of over 80 members of the VASJ community, whether it was alumni or family and friends of current students and faculty, were read at Mass. The congregation was asked to pray for them.
"On this Feast of All Saints, remember all those who have died and pray for them," said Bishop Gries. "For those names who were read, eternal rest be unto them, O Lord."
The banner displaying the theme of the Mass, which also served as the cover of the programs, was designed by VASJ student Mary Furlan ’18.
Mary Furlan is a senior at VASJ. In addition to being a member of PR Club, Mary is involved in Peer Ministry, National Honors Society, and CSPJ. In her free time, she enjoys photography, art, and spending time with her friends. Mary plans to attend Case Western Reserve University and major in Business Management.
