A group of VASJ students had the opportunity to participate in the televised Academic Challenge game show, competing against two other teams by answering questions about math, science, history, and current events.
It truly isn’t a competition about winning or losing. Many of the Academic Challenge benefits come from preparing for the event and the actual experience of competing under pressure in a live, televised event.
“I think the students received quite a unique experience,” VASJ Academic Challenge moderator and English teacher Ms. Tonica Johnson says. “In addition to practicing recall of their learned knowledge, students were able to witness the behind-the-scenes action of a broadcast.”
It was the first time the students had participated in the event and this is Johnson’s first year moderating the team. They all enjoyed the experience.
“It was a fun and memorable afternoon,” Johnson says. “I am proud of how interested and engaged they were in the whole process, from beginning to end. It wasn't just about the competition; it was a whole day of exposure to new experiences!”
