December 4, 2013It was a special moment last May when sophomore Abigail Smith was notified by mail that she had received the Geis Family Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 toward her tuition at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School.
“It was really exciting because it is a big scholarship," says Smith. "It made me really thankful."
His Excellency the Most Reverend Richard Lennon, Bishop of Cleveland, personally congratulated Smith and the other scholarship winners at a reception held for the Geis Scholars at St. Joseph Academy on November 21, 2013. The event was hosted by Eugene Boyer, associate superintendent for secondary schools/Newman Campus Ministry for the Diocese of Cleveland.
Smith took the opportunity to thank the Geis family for the scholarship.“It’s given me the opportunity to come to a great school and further my Catholic education,” Smith says. “It is giving me the chance to go to a good high school and eventually a good college – things I wouldn’t be able to do if I wasn’t at VASJ.”
VASJ sophomore Abigail Smith thanks the Geis family for the scholarship she received toward her education.Established in 2010, the Geis Family Scholarship is awarded annually to 10 students who are enrolled in Catholic high schools within the Diocese of Cleveland, have a minimum scholastic achievement of a 3.0 grade point average, are involved in school life, and consistently demonstrate positive character traits.
"The true story of our success is not our institutional victories, but rather the excellence of our individual students who are role models as students and citizens, and Abby Smith is certainly a perfect example of this,” said VASJ Principal David Csank, who introduced Smith at the Geis Family Scholarship reception.
VASJ President Richard Osborne as well as members of Smith’s family were among those who celebrated with her at the event.
