After falling just three strokes short of making a repeat run to states, VASJ senior Sammy Turk officially closed the chapter on her high school golf career on Oct. 6.
Turk placed 8th in the Northeast Division II girls district tournament at Sable Creek, shooting an 82 (43-39-82). While Turk acknowledged that districts were a lot more challenging this year, she said she's proud of her overall performance.
"I think I drove the ball well and putted well. My score just wasn't good enough to advance," she said. "Although I would have loved to be back down in Columbus fighting for a state title, I can be happy knowing that I had a solid high school career playing as a girl from men's tees."
Turk secured her place at districts after shooting an 81 (40-41-81) at sectionals in late September.
Turk finishes her high school golf career as the most decorated VASJ or St. Joseph golfer of all time. In addition to being a state finalist in 2021 and a two-time district qualifier, Turk also shares a tie for the VASJ low score of all time — a 35 at Briardale from the men's tees.
"It feels like yesterday that I was a freshman playing in my first high school event, so nervous because I was a girl playing with boys," Turk shared. "If you would have told freshman Sammy that she would have won multiple matches, be a two-time district qualifier, play in the state tournament, and is going to have the opportunity to play college golf, she would have said you're crazy. I can hang up my Viking golf uniform knowing that I left my mark here at VASJ and have no regrets in my four years of playing high school golf."
Turk will continue her golf career at Gannon University in Erie, PA. Best of luck, Sammy!
