The Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School community gathered the morning of Thursday, Nov. 11 to honor all veterans during a school-wide assembly.
Chuck Kortovich ’95 served as this year's keynote speaker. Jim Tobin, the father-in-law of Kortovich, introduced him to the students and also made special mention of VASJ staff who are veterans.
Kortovich enlisted in the Marine Corps the summer after his junior year at VASJ. He left for boot camp the day after his high school graduation and served in the Marines for four years before he was honorably discharged in 1999. After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, he reenlisted and deployed to Iraq in 2005 with the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines.
VASJ students lit memorial candles in honor of those who served in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and the War on Terror.
Senior class president Kelsey Armen recited the Remembrance Prayer.
At the end of the assembly, VASJ President Thomas M. Carone asked all students, faculty and staff, and guests to exit the gym in silence as a way to show respect and honor to those who have served.
Following the assembly, a memorial wreath was placed outside on the VASJ Veterans Memorial. The monument recognizes all who served, including alumni from Villa Angela Academy, St. Joseph High School and Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, with special commemoration of Vikings killed in action.
