Jim Tobin has been a stalwart supporter of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School for decades. Becoming involved with the school the day his children started attending, he’s never turned back.
In recognition of his dedicated support of VASJ, Tobin was inducted into the VASJ Hall of Fame in 1999. As past president of the Oarsmen Club, Tobin still plays a key role today and is heavily involved in the annual clambake, a major fundraiser that supports the school. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Veterans Memorial at VASJ, which was dedicated in 2016.
In addition to being a current member of the VASJ Board of Advisors, Tobin is supporting the future of the school with a generous gift to the Keeping Our Promises Campaign.
What motivated you to make a gift to VASJ’s Keeping Our Promises Campaign?
My wife, Marianne, and I believe in the mission of the school. We believe in Catholic education and the academic and interpersonal learning environment at VASJ. God has blessed us with a wonderful family. It was time to give back to the school that has had such a positive impact on our family.
You’ve been a long-time supporter of the school, including serving as a board member. Why is it so important to you to give back?
I believe in the motto of "time, talent and treasure." It is important to support the institutions that have a positive impact in our community. VASJ is such an institution. In this current environment, where there are so many things that we can allow to divide us, VASJ provides an atmosphere in which our kids can learn from each other and have their own positive impact on society. How can we not support this school that offers our students such an opportunity?
What sort of personal meaning does it hold for you to now see your grandsons attending VASJ?
Our three children and our son-in-law made lifelong friends while at VASJ. They had teachers and coaches who made a positive impact on their lives. This place is special, and I want that same experience for my grandchildren. I think all grandparents want the best for their grandkids.
What sort of difference do you believe the Keeping Our Promises Campaign will have on VASJ?
This building is more than 70 years old. It has "good bones" but needs some upgrades, such as windows, HVAC, technology and classroom enhancements, along with the support of the tuition assistance effort. There has never been a formal capital campaign, so this effort is long overdue. These improvements will support the mission of the school and certainly improve the learning environment for the students and their teachers.
Which attributes make VASJ so special to you?
I believe VASJ is a very unique school in the greater Cleveland area. The school brings together students from a wide area, with various backgrounds and experiences. They are given the opportunity to learn in a Catholic school based on the charisms of the Marianist and Ursuline communities. They are taught by some very caring, committed and loving teachers, counselors and coaches. Even beyond the academics, our students learn to assimilate and grow in the greater society.
Why would you encourage others to support the campaign?
Donating to the VASJ Keeping Our Promises Campaign is a wise investment. The mission of the school and end product speak for themselves. VASJ provides Northeast Ohio with educated, productive and caring graduates educated in the Catholic faith and tradition. Your donation to the campaign will make a difference.
