It was a historic day in the Viking Village, as work officially began on the new turf field at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School.
VASJ administration, VASJ advisory board members, field committee members, key donors, and Michael Zelenka, associate superintendent for secondary schools at the Diocese of Cleveland, all participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the field on June 26.
Sufficient funds had been raised by May to begin phase one of the field renovation project, which includes a new turf field and goal posts. The goal is to have the turf field installed by the end of August, in time for the 2023-24 school year.
"Make no mistake — the Viking community made this project happen," said VASJ President Tom Carone. "I'm just so excited, and I can't wait to see it all happen."
Joe Scaminace '71, who played a key role in the field project, thanked Carone for his leadership and explained how his time at St. Joseph High School set the foundation for his life.
"This field is not only for our athletes but for all of our students. VASJ is a place to be proud of, and I think this field is going to make us even more proud," Scaminace said.
Coach John Storey '59 called forward past alumni and current students who have played on the field to celebrate the momentous occasion.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony, guests enjoyed a small reception in the Villa Angela Academy Heritage Center.
