Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School is one win away from a seventh boys basketball championship.
The only thing standing in the Vikings’ way is an old familiar foe – Lima Central Catholic.
Five VASJ players scored in double figures as the Vikings pulled away in the second half for an 81-64 victory over Lynchburg-Clay in a Division III state semifinal on March 17.
The Vikings will play for the state title on Saturday, March 19 at 10:45 a.m. against Lima Central Catholic. This is the third straight season the two teams will meet for the championship – VASJ won last year and the Thunderbirds beat the Vikings in 2014.
Sophomore point guard Jerry Higgins finished with 16 points in the win over L-C. Freshman center Alonzo Gaffney had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and he also added three blocked shots. Seniors Sherman Dean and Kevin Roberts each had 14 and Danny McGarry chipped in 11 for VASJ.
The teams were tied at 15 after one quarter, but the Vikings dominated the final 24 minutes of play.
