Mr. Thomas Reuter, a new teacher at VASJ, has already made a lasting impression on the student body. After graduating from Notre Dame University, Reuter began working at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago for two years. Later, Reuter went down a different career path and became the Executive Director of a non-profit agency called The Samaritan House. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, The Samaritan House helped homeless men and women find full-time jobs.
“Doing the non-profit work was something I didn’t expect to do,” Reuter says. “I thought I would teach because I had a great experience in a Catholic high school, but I do not regret any of it.”
After working for a long time with that nonprofit, he moved to Cleveland. Reuter’s focus went back into teaching. He entered the Masters of Education program at Cleveland State University as well as receiving a master’s in Mathematics. With all this hard work, he was able to teach at Cuyahoga Community College and at Cleveland State University. Through this time, Reuter still had a longing to teach high school students, so he did!
During the 2017-18 school year, Reuter began tutoring VASJ students. He began working alongside Mrs. Marxen, who teaches English and is in charge of the Directed Studies program and assisted students with their math work.
“This is where I got to know the students,” Reuter says.”They were all really friendly, and actually interested in learning.”
After the school year ended, Reuter was offered a job to teach full-time at VASJ. He gladly took the position.
“I felt like I already had a positive feeling about this school because I had tutored here,’ he says. Since then it has only gotten better.”
During his time working at VASJ, he has found the motto of, “Where friends become family,” to truly fit VASJ’s student body.
“What I like here is that because we have students from such diverse backgrounds, we can pretty much be who we are, and to be in that kind of loving environment can make all the difference,” Reuter says.
Reuter has one main goal he wants to accomplish at VASJ.
“I want to help students understand and really appreciate math,” he says. “My main goal is to provide them with a good grounding for their next math course and the ones to come.”
We thank Mr. Thomas Reuter for joining the VASJ Math Department and cannot wait to see the things he has in store for his students. Jillian DiDona is a junior at VASJ. She is co-captain of the swim team, a member of the Drama Club, and the Sports Editor for the yearbook. After high school, Jillian plans to major in biology and hopes to pursue a career in it as well.
