Summer reading for the 2021-2022 school year is assigned to
Honors English students only. All incoming freshmen and all CP students at every grade level do not have summer reading at this time.
Honors students: You will have only one (1) required summer reading novel this summer rather than two. The selections are listed below. You will receive an email with the assignment as well as an invitation to the Summer Reading Google classroom. Please look for the invitation in your email. Teachers will be posting additional prompts, questions and activities related to your assigned novel. Check this frequently so that you are prepared when you come back to school in August.
All students are encouraged to purchase the novel so that they can take notes and refer back to the book for the summer reading assessment (quiz or project) that will be given the first week of school.
Take notes on characters, themes/motifs, symbols and any other items of literary merit within the novel. Annotations are strongly encouraged. This will help you not only remember important items regardless of when you read the novel, but it will also help when preparing for the assessment.
A word of caution: These novels are also either movies or an adapted series. They are not the same as the novels and have, in some cases, significant differences. Do not try to take a short cut. They are also available as audio books, but that makes annotating difficult.
Sophomore Honors: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Junior Honors: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Senior Honors: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
