The long-awaited field renovation project at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School is finally coming to fruition.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors and alumni, enough funds have been raised to begin phase one of the field renovation, which will include a new turf field and goal posts. The goal is to have the turf field installed by the end of August, in time for the 2023-24 school year.
VASJ President Tom Carone called the new field a “game changer” for the Viking Village.
“We are extremely excited to announce the approval to move forward with phase one of our turf athletic field,” Carone said. “There are no words to express our everlasting gratitude to our amazing community who provided the financial resources to make this dream come true. I am so happy for our student-athletes who are going to be able to practice and play on a safe, new turf field — something the school has never had.”
Nearly 65% of VASJ students participate in at least one sport. Football, boys and girls soccer, cheerleading, baseball and softball, and track and field will all be able to utilize the renovated field. The school also looks forward to partnering with CYO programs to support the greater community.
“Thank you to the donors and alumni who supported phase one of the field renovation project,” said VASJ Principal Lorenzo Jones. “This will be a great opportunity for all students who attend VASJ. The field will ultimately assist our students academically, removing the travel time to and from practices and games that they were accustomed to, giving them back valuable time in their day.”
VASJ will continue to solicit funds to close the gap for phase one of the field renovation. Fundraising will then shift to phase two of the project, which will entail new grandstands, an upgraded track with fencing, a press box, new field lighting, and updated scoreboards.
“The Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School mission commits to the spiritual, academic and personal growth of each student, and the renovation of the athletic field allows VASJ to form men and women who excel in spirit, mind and body in an integrated way,” said Michael Zelenka, associate superintendent for secondary schools at the Diocese of Cleveland. “With gratitude to the many generous donors and excitement for the VASJ students, we look forward to the many ways in which this project will enhance the VASJ experience.”
