The walls of the Tech Building look a little different these days thanks to Coach John Storey ’59. Over the last month, Coach Storey scoured St. Joseph High School and VASJ yearbooks to find football team pictures. Working with Keener Printing in Euclid, the photos were enlarged and framed, and they now hang in a beautiful display inside the Tech Building.
Showcasing the legacy of St. Joseph High School and VASJ football is important to Coach Storey.
“We talk about our history all the time. I wanted students to be aware of all the players who have contributed to the Viking football program and our legacy here,” he said.
Starting with the 1952 football season, photos on the left side of the wall showcase St. Joseph High School football teams by season, while the right side of the wall highlights VASJ football teams by season. The season depicted in each photo will soon be listed beneath each frame. Coach Storey also dedicated a special standalone photo for legendary Coach Bill Gutbrod to recognize his achievements and dedication to the Viking football program.
Coach Storey said some visitors to the building have already stopped to take a look at the wall, and he’s excited for students to learn more about the history of the school’s football program as well.
“Students have to come in the front door of the Tech Building and walk through this hallway to get to the workout room, so it was a perfect spot,” he said. “I’m sure our students will want to stop and look too, especially since some students had fathers who played here.”
