The cover design for the 2017-18 VASJ yearbook looks quite different from previous years, and there’s a great reason why.
To give a brief overview of the past 27 VASJ yearbooks, think of lots of red, blue, and beige. The designs have been very centric on those three colors, with a few picture collages or words on the cover.
For the 2017-18 yearbook, the editors, senior Antonia Furlan and junior Patrick Bradford, wanted to go outside of the box when it came to the cover. That is where the current design arose. Not only is the color eye-popping with its white background and semi-rainbow of colors along the spine, but the word art on the front, featuring ideas and facets of the Viking Village are also attention-grabbing.
To create a cover truly representative of the place “Where friends become family,” the yearbook staff wanted the school population to have a say in what we represent as Vikings. More than 60 words were submitted through a school-wide survey asking students, staff, and faculty to describe VASJ in two to three words.
The response was quite clear on what the people at VASJ truly admire about their home away from home. Words ranging from the three charisms of the school, Respect, Resilience, and Responsibility, to simple descriptions of the student body, were all submitted.
“Our cover was inspired by what our school represents,” says Senior Editor Antonia Furlan ‘18. “We are very excited to fill it with other things that represent our school.”
The words that are now a permanent and tangible part of the history of this institution, are true representations of the virtuous Vikings that are here at Villa Angela -St. Joseph High School.
